The Minister of Transport directs and implements Government transport policy. The Minister of Transport oversees the work of the Department of Transport.
The Department of Transport is responsible for:
· The delivery of the national roads programme as part of the National Development Plan and implementing the Government's road safety strategy
· Providing a well functioning, integrated public transport system · Improving public transport infrastructure and facilities
Setting and implementing aviation policy · Providing airport infrastructure and competitive airport services · Reducing travel times · Supplying quality commuting choices for the public · Reducing congestion
Establishing, promoting, regulating and enforcing maritime safety and security standards Providing emergency response services and safeguard the maritime environment · Ports and Shipping Policy
The duties of some aspects of these policies has been given to a range of state-sponsored bodies but the Department of Transport retains overall responsibility.
